About South Africa Destinations

South Africa graces the southernmost tip of the African continent, and is crowned by the Cape of Good Hope at its tip. While its coastline is washed by the South Atlantic on the west and Indian Ocean in the east, the land boundaries of South Africa are shared by Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe to the north, Mozambique and Swaziland in the north-east. The demographic of South African people mostly comprises of native African ethnicities, but a large part of it has European roots thanks to the hundreds of years of colonialism.

Wildlife in South Africa

A majority of South African tourism is for the wildlife opportunities the country provides. The Big 5 of South Africa in terms of wildlife are elephant, Cape buffalo, lion, leopard and black rhino. You will find them in enough numbers during safaris in parks like Kruger National Park, Addo Elephant National Park, Tsitsikamma National park and Pilanesberg Game Reserve. Africa is still ahead of all other continents when it comes to wildlife, and you will get to see a good share of critically endangered animals on your South Africa travel.

Beaches in South Africa

South African beaches are not as famous as its wildlife, but with two oceans on two sides, there are enough for you to make your South Africa trip a seaside vacation if you want to. The port cities of the country – Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town have quite a collection of long stretches of sand, azure blue water and cool hubs for hanging out along the shore, thus making the beaches of SA quite a haunt. Camps Bay Beach and Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town, Grotto Beach in Hermanus, Trafalgar Beach and Marina Beach in South Coast, Dolphin Beach in Jeffrey’s Bay and Humewood Beach in Port Elizabeth are some of the best ones you can try.

To help you make your vacation wholesome, here are the best cities in South Africa that you should visit.

1. Johannesburg

When you visit South Africa, the one city you have to visit is Johannesburg. It is the largest and most frequented city of the country, and the capital of Guateng Province. What began as a gold mining settlement has turned into a major tourism hub. Among major attractions, there are Nelson Mandela House Museum, Apartheid Museum, Cradle of Humankind archaeological site, Gold Reef City and Constitution Hill. If you are a cricket fan, take a tour of the famous Wanderers Stadium as well.

2. Cape Town

South Africa has three different seats for the three pillars of democracy, and Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa – seat of the Parliament. It is also the most important port city and home to the famous flat-top Table Mountain. It overlooks the cricket stadium of Cape Town, which you must have seen if you take interest in the sports. Do visit the prison museum at Robben Island, made famous for one holding the creator of modern SA – Nelson Mandela.

3. Port Elizabeth

Cradling the shore of Algoa Bay in Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth is known for its many beaches and trekking trails. Take the Donkin Heritage Trail to reach the Victorian landmarks of Old Hill. Other than spending time at the beach or trekking, one can go for safaris at Kragga Kamma Game Park or take boat trips into the sea for whale watching and bird spotting.

4. Durban

Yet another coastal city, Durban is located in the famous Kwazulu-Natal Province of South Africa. The city is a dynamic melting pot of Indian, African and European ethnicities. Refurbished completely for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Durban boasts a long seafront promenade that runs all the way from Ushaka Marine World to Moses Mabhida Stadium.

5. Pretoria

Dotted with thousands of Jacaranda trees, Pretoria is the administrative capital of the country, and houses the Presidency and the Cabinet. A place of great historical significance is the Union Building where Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as President. The Pretoria Zoo, Church Square and Voortrekker Monument are the other places to visit here.

S's 5 days trip to South Africa

The team at TravelLykke have been very professional in their approach right through. They have been very patient and understanding of the requirements and accommodative to all kinds of doubts and queries and options too. Fairly transparent in the dealings and have a good set of on-ground contacts in
S Africa who too have been professional and on time without delays and exceptions. A suggestion: there were some legs where we were informed we need to take Uber (to & fro Robben Island & Table Top Mountain). For the kind of spends done by us (Rs 3 Lakhs +) overall, it would have been helpful if these too could have been accommodated in the package. It is the nuisance value of having to book, wait etc. Also more minute detailing of the Full day Cape Peninsula tour could have been share earlier - we got it on landing from the local guide and it was very educative. Why not share this ahead of time? Some travel agencies give a backpack or travel kit (the amount of Rs 3 Lakhs is HUGE) with your branding. In this case it is singularly absent. Wonder why? We stayed in 3 hotels - Emerald Guest house in Johannesburg (Rating Poor to Good only); Kruger Park Adventure Lodge ( Excellent); Holiday Inn Express at Cape Town (Excellent).

We had an amazing trip to South Africa. It is a beautiful country to visit with very hospitable people around. Everything went well without any hiccups. The hotels, cab drivers and other details were well planned by Nikhil from Besten/MK Holidays, special thanks to him. Some elements which can be im
proved were the visits planned during our stay at Knysna as they were quite some distance away from our hotel. Will definitely recommend Travel Triangle to others for planning their trips.

Utkarsh's 7 days trip to South Africa

Would recommend the location to everyone for a must-visit Bucket list item. Would NEVER recommend the travel agent to anyone regarding any trip. About the destination: South Africa is definitely one of the best places to visit in the months of January. The weather is pleasant throughout the day wi
th light breezes greeting you wherever you go. We were really lucky with our safari in Kwantu as we were able to sight almost all of the variety of wildlife that they have in the reserve. The stay at Kwantu was also equally comfortable. Knysna and Oudtshoorn were another pair of scenic locations and the drive from Port Elizabeth to Kwantu to Knysna & Oudtshoorn was undoubtedly one of the best drives I have ever had. The visit to Cape Town was as exciting as we were expecting and the city welcomed us with a marvelous evening sky as we drove in. The local sightseeing service available in the city was a good enough option as it drove us through almost all the places of interest within and around the city. The Table Top Mountain did live to it's grandeur and the view from up top was really breathtaking. The entire Cape peninsula as well as the town were so tiny yet so vast. The Cape Peninsula tour on the next day was equally interesting, covering the entirety of the Cape of Good Hope, the Botanical garden, Hout Bay Harbour and the most awaited Jackass Penguin colony in Boulders beach. About the travel agent: The approach of MKHolidays before and after the first payment for the trip was in dire contrast. While they were following up with us multiple times throughout the day with even minor changes in the itinerary before we made the first payment, after that we had to call them up over 4-5 times for every update or voucher request. We did no get the hotel vouchers till the very last week of our travel. The flight ticket from Johannesberg to Port Elizabeth were given to us at midnight just before the day of our flight. Without that, we had been stranded in JoBerg with no onward flight tickets. The downpayment for the car rental which was included in the travel package had not been made and I had to pay for the same from my pocket. Upon arrival in Cape Town, when we went to Holiday Inn (a 4-star property), we were told that there was no booking in our name and the hotel voucher given to us for that place was invalid. All calls to MKHolidays went unanswered & the Travel Triangle representative merely shrugged off saying that he would not be able to help as the bookings were under the agent's purview. I had to pay for the first night from my own pocket. Upon the next day, I was told that the hotel booked for me was the Holiday Inn Express (a 3-star property), even though the package specifically included the other property. We reluctantly moved to Holiday Inn Express, only to realize that our booking there was cancelled due to a no-show the previous night. We had to wait for a longer time for the bookings to get re-listed. The vouchers for each day's activity were given to us only on the previous midnight. This caused an aura of uncertainty throughout our trip as we never knew what time we had to wake up the next day for the pickup. Had South Africa not been that marvelous a country, the callous approach of the travel agent during the trip would definitely have ruined the experience for us.
